Details & Description

Since 1997, Wheelin Hawks has provided those with physical disabilities an opportunity to participate in recreational and sport activities. Created by Dr. Lisa Olenik, former professor at Huntingdon College, the program allows those with disabilities opportunities to learn that their disabilities do not have to limit them from participating in recreational and sport activities. The program was initially sponsored by Birmingham's Lakeshore Foundation. Through grants, the Lakeshore Foundation set out to establish and assist with the operational cost of wheelchair recreational programs across the state. Huntingdon College was one of 5 programs from across the state to receive one of the initial grants. In 2003, Huntingdon College took over operation and funding of the program. Since then the program has been administered by the faculty of the Human Performance program and students of the College. Donations from local businesses, civic organizations, and individuals have assisted with the funding of the program. The program works closely with the Montgomery Therapeutic Recreation Center, which assists with providing transportation for local outings.
