High School Sports

High School Football: courtesy Charlie Ingram

While the state of Alabama is known for its college football, it is at the high school level where it all begins. And when it comes to high school football, Alabama boasts a pretty impressive resume. In 2007, Alabama had five players who were members of the ultra-elite Rivals.com Rivals100 in 2007 and ended with two teams ranked in the prestigious MaxPreps National Top 25: the Prattville Lions (ranked 9th) and the Hoover Bucs (ranked 25th). If the name "Hoover Bucs" rings a bell, it's probably due to their overwhelming national fame. Host to the wildly popular MTV mega-hit TV show Two-A-Days, Hoover High is Alabama's, and perhaps America's, most famous high school football program.

And it's not just football. Alabama high schools have produced the kind of talent in all sports that has gone on to flourish in organizations like the NFL, NBA and MLB, to name a few. Many of the state's high school sports tournaments are organized under the Montgomery-based Alabama High School Athletics Association. Whether it's six-time NBA Champion Robert Horry's hometown of Andalusia or NFL superstar Terrell Owen's hometown of Alexander City, Alabama's high schools are always home to the next big thing. You just have to come down here to find it.
