For 22 years, James William "Jim" Fyffe was the undisputed voice of Auburn University football.
A native of Kentucky, Fyffe became the play-by-play announcer for Auburn games in 1981. Over the next two decades, he was honored nine times as "Alabama Sportscaster of the Year."
For die-hard Auburn fans, Fyffe's calls are often as memorable as the plays themselves, such as the team's 91-yard drive to pull ahead of Georgia Tech with less than 30 seconds on the clock in 1987. When Auburn receiver Lawyer Tillman caught a pass in the end zone, Fyffe captured the audiences shock with the unforgettable eruption of: "Touchdown Auburn! Touchdown Auburn! Touchdown Auburn! Tillman Tillman Tillman!"
Best known for his work covering Auburn, Fyffe also called games by the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL, and the Birmingham franchise of the Arena Football League.
Fyffe died in 2003, shortly after returning home from an Auburn Alumni gathering in Prattville, Ala. In 2005, he was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
