Mark Whitlock

Mark Whitlock has been an outdoorsman since he was about 9 years old. In 1979, he bought a faltering sporting goods store in the Birmingham suburb of Vestavia Hills, which became Mark's Outdoor Sports. In the past 26 years, he has transformed his store into a staple in the outdoor community. A highly respected leader in the industry, Mark hosts the annual Lake Open Bass Fishing Tournament and incorporates a conservation message. In the last 10 years, he has helped put more than a million fish into Lay Lake. He has also served on the board of Ducks Unlimited, the Wild Turkey Federation, Safari Club International and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. In 2004, Mark was named Fishing Tackle Retailer magazine's 2004 Independent Retailer of the Year. Most recently, Field and Stream magazine named Mark's Outdoor Sports one of 12 best outdoor shops in the country, and the only one that caters to bass fishermen.
