Doug Phillips
Originator, Producer and Host of Discovering Alabama, Tuscaloosa
Inviting Alabama Public Television viewers to "come along as we discover Alabama" is the signature phrase uttered by Dr. Doug Phillips near the opening of each episode in the Discovering Alabama television series. Phillips' interest in nature was piqued when he was a lad growing up on a farm in Blount County. Over the past 20-plus years, as the originator, producer and host of the award-winning nature television series, he has shared his passion for Alabama's wild places with an annual viewership now estimated at more than 1 million. The series is a production of the University of Alabama's Museum of Natural History in Tuscaloosa. Viewers travel around Alabama alongside Phillips, and typically his faithful companion, Turkey, a yellow Labrador retriever, exploring topics as varied as the Sipsey River swamp, the red-cockaded woodpecker, the Black Belt and the state's geological history. The program strives to promote awareness of Alabama's natural and cultural history, and provide educational benefits to K–12 classrooms.
