The Palace Ice Cream and Sandwich Shop in Tuscumbia is more than a place to get the perfect milk shake or a tasty sandwich. It’s a nostalgic return to the past. As a teenager in the late 1940s and early ‘50s, owner Harvey Robbins frequented The Palace Drug Store, slurping down sodas from the soda fountain. By the mid-nineties, the drugstore was gone and the building, first built in 1833, had fallen into disrepair. One afternoon in 2000, Harvey and his wife Joyce Ann drove by the former social gathering place. Their sentimental journey prompted them to restore this piece of Tuscumbia’s history. Today, frequent visitors enjoy the history as much as they do the milk shakes, malts, chicken salad and other menu choices.
