Layered Salad

Description:
Layered and congealed salads are found at every family reunion, church homecoming and funeral in Alabama. This is a particularly good salad that you can make the night before.
Recipe Type: Side Dish

Ingredients:
  • 1 medium head lettuce, torn into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped Alabama celery
  • 1/2 cup chopped Alabama bell pepper
  • 1/2 cup sweet Alabama onion or green onions
  • 1 can (small) tiny English peas, drained
  • 1 small can water chestnuts, sliced
  • 6 to 8 strips crisp bacon, crumbled
  • 1 pint mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese
Directions:

Lay ingredients 1 through 7 in bowl. Mix mayonnaise with sugar and spread over top of salad. Seal all sides and corners. This seals the moisture in. Cover. Refrigerate overnight. Spread with cheese before serving.
