Alabama Year of the Food Recipes

There's no shortage of classic Alabama recipes. Contributions to this list were made by restaurants and food manufacturers around the state, and a number of cookbooks and cooking pages produced through the years by The Birmingham News were referenced.

Perhaps the most interesting find was the cache of yellowed recipes found in a folder at the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel office. These included the fascinating lye hominy information and the useful guides on how to fry chicken, among others.

More contributions came from various food promoters (the meat people, and so on) and from favorite family recipes. Those are really the prizes of the collection. If it's been passed down from mother to daughter to daughter, you know it's good. But more than that, it's near to the heart, because of the central role Alabama food plays in every family ritual.
