Alabama Offers A Smorgasbord of Food Festivals

In Alabama, food is so much more than just nourishment. It's a reason to celebrate. And celebrate we do –all year long –with an enticing smorgasbord of food festivals.
Some of the state's more famous cuisine–centered events include the Alabama Crawfish Festival, which takes place each spring in Faundsdale and features live music and thousands of pounds of hot crawfish, the Birmingham Greek Festival in mid–September, and the National Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores in mid–October of each year.
But rest assured, these are just the appetizers. There are culinary celebrations almost every month in Alabama and for just about every taste. In fact, there are nearly 100 food-related events taking place in Alabama in 2005. Others include (but are not limited to):
- The Alabama Food Festival held in July at the Pepper Place Saturday Market in Birmingham
- The Annual Gourmet Buffet and Wine Tasting held in early January in Anniston
- Elberta's German Sausage Festival in late March and again in October
- Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival in Moulton in early April
- The Baldwin County Strawberry Festival in early April in Loxley
- The St. Elias Maronite Catholic Church Lebanese Food Festival in mid–April in Birmingham
- The mid–May Catfish Festival in Scottsboro
- Huntsville's Whistlestop Festival & Rocket City Barbecue Cookoff in early May
- Brewton's Alabama Blueberry Festival in mid–June
- Clanton's Peach Festival in late June
- The Slocomb Tomato Festival in mid–June
- The Franklin County Watermelon Festival in late August in Russellville
- The Alabama Catfish Festival held in Greensboro in mid–September
- The Sweet Potato Festival in Tuskegee in mid–October
- The National Peanut Festival in early November in Dothan
- And then, of course, there is the Christmas on the River Barbecue Cookoff in Demopolis in early December
