Long before he became co-owner of Montgomery-based Whitfield Foods, Frank G. Whitfield, Jr. dreamed of joining the family business. His great-grandfather, Louis Whitfield, founded the company known for its Alaga Syrup in 1906. Young Frank made it his business to learn every facet of Whitfield's operation. At age 23, however, he was diagnosed with leukemia and had to put his apprenticeship on hold. He underwent a bone-marrow transplant, emerging from the experience with a renewed focus on life.

As co-owner of one of Alabama's oldest companies, Whitfield credits the success of the business to having good employees. "If I didn't have good employees, I wouldn't be in business," Whitfield says. Those who know him also know that Whitfield deserves a considerable amount of credit. He works hard and cares about his customers and employees. In addition to its syrup, Whitfield packages a variety of products, including many national-brand juices, and handles the needs of major grocery chains.
