"I knew," Sister says, "if I could get people to taste my rolls, they would buy them." In 1989, Patricia Schubert-Barnes, founder of Sister Schubert's Homemade Rolls, operated a catering business from her home in Troy. That year, she volunteered to donate some of her signature rolls to a food fair at her church. She filled 80 orders; the next year, 200; and the following year, 300. Soon, she had turned her porch into a mini bakery. Demand quickly outstripped capacity, so she moved her business into a 1,000-square-foot room at her family's furniture warehouse. In 1994 Sister Schubert relocated to Luverne, where the business has grown into a multi–million–dollar operation. In 2000, she sold the stock in her company to a specialty food corporation in Ohio, but retained her role as a hands-on executive. Today, the bakery ships its original Parkerhouse, cinnamon, orange, blueberry and sausage wrap yeast rolls as well as Southern and jalapeño cornbread to thousands of stores across the country.
