David C. Clarke, board chairman of the Alabama Restaurant Association, has had a successful career as a sales manager, public affairs director and marketing consultant for several national firms and corporations. He did not find his true niche in life, however, until he and his wife decided to follow their dream and move to Gulf Shores. In 1995, as the new owner of Nolan's Restaurant, he took a business that was doing less than $700,000 annually to the 2003 revenue of a little more than $1.8 million. Nolan's Restaurant and Lounge opened in 1987 and has been a favorite place for dining and dancing for both locals and tourists ever since. Clarke was named Restaurateur of the Year by the Pleasure Island Restaurant Association (1999) and the Alabama Restaurant Association (2000). In 2004, Nolan's received the Sunny 105.7 FM "People's Choice Awards" for Best Place to Go for Steak, for Dinner, and for Romantic Dinner. Nolan's offers a bountiful menu featuring handcut steaks, including the famous Steer Butt, and succulent seafood dishes.
