Cycling

Search Search for Cycling Attractions, Events and Accommodations

Cycling is an increasingly popular activity on Alabama's roadways. It's no surprise, considering we have some of the best roads to ride in the country. From the screaming downhill (and hill climbing) near Huntsville and Guntersville State Park, to fast metro rides in Birmingham's beautiful urban and suburban areas, to the sandy stretches along Alabama's Gulf Coast, cyclists can find every type of riding they crave.

Visitors from other states may be surprised that Alabama is home to several racing clubs, as well as enough outfitters to equip a world-class peloton. There are daily group and training rides within a short distance of most regions of the state.

Cyclists in Alabama have mild winters, and love training year round to keep in top shape. Spring, summer and fall offer great weather, and a constant variety of cycling events for riders at every level, from beginner rides to Cat I and II class road races.

Those who enjoy a more laid-back pace can partake in group rides leaving from Birmingham, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, Mobile, Montgomery and others. There are rides for families and beginners as short as just a few miles, and there are centuries and even double centuries (for those who like their rides to start at 2 a.m. and last 200 miles!).

Follow along for a class in paceline technique taught by the experts while flying down Old Leeds Road at (or above) the 35 mph speed limit. Or take it easy under the shade of tree-lined streets of one of Alabama's small towns. Ride alone, ride with a friend, or go with a group. Alabama's roads are some of the friendliest (and smoothest) around.

Health Benefits

Riding your bike as a part of your daily routine or during vacation is an adventurous and fun activity. Biking is much faster than walking and it allows you to enjoy the scenic route. A 20-minute leisure bike ride is equal to 1 mile of walking and it will burn 205 calories while providing a workout for your leg muscles. While biking, bring along healthy snacks such as apples and water.
