Basketball probably isn't the first sport that comes to mind when you think of Alabama. That's more a testament to our state's success in other sports than it is a knock on our basketball legacy. Year in and year out, Alabama produces some elite basketball talent. And it starts on the high school level, where Alabama currently has eight players ranked in the prestigious Rivals.com Rivals150 for 2008, which ranks only the top 150 basketball players in the country. Since 2000, Alabama has had five players selected to either the PARADE or McDonald's High School All-American team, three of which have gone on to successful careers at the University of Alabama.
And it's not just success at the college level. Since 1976, Alabama and Auburn together have had twenty players selected in the first round of the NBA draft. This, of course, includes NBA legend and Alabama native Charles Barkley, who starred at Auburn and went on to become one of the greatest basketball players who ever lived. Look around the NBA today and you'll see Alabama natives like four-time Defensive Player of the Year Ben Wallace or six-time NBA Champion and clutch-shot legend Robert Horry. If you prefer to stick with the college game, we've got plenty to offer. There's the upstart UAB Blazers. There's the exciting SEC action at both Alabama and Auburn. And there's the thrilling NCAA "March Madness" Tournament games, which Birmingham, Ala., has hosted nine times since 1982. So whether you admire elite high school talent, fast-paced college action or NBA superstardom, Alabama has it all.
