605 Dauphin St.
Mobile, AL 36602
For more than six decades, Wintzell’s Oyster House has been a landmark in historic downtown Mobile. Known far and wide for its “Oyster fried, stewed or nude,” Winzell’s was founded in 1938 by Oliver Wintzell. Through economic boom and bust, it has continuously survived at its original location on Lower Dauphin Street. Although the family sold the restaurant in the 1970s, the original interior with its walls covered with Oliver's homespun sayings, are still intact today. Selections from his sayings are randomly displayed throughout this site. Famous for fresh Gulf seafood, Wintzell's was named in Willard Scott's All-American Cookbook for the Best Oysters and Crabs. The new owner, SouthernPointe Group, Inc. purchased Wintzell's with the firm intent of keeping Oliver Wintzell's legacy intact, but also plans to make Wintzell's a household name again along the Gulf Coast and beyond.
