Cycling – Road Route – Spanish Fort to Hurricane Landing

The small growth community of Spanish Fort, east of Mobile and north of I-10 is well located for cyclists to explore the lightly traveled roads of northern Baldwin County. Spanish Fort is the popular starting point for many group rides. This particular route is a modified out-and-back that throws in a scenic loop at the top end of the route. The terrain is much more hilly compared to south of I-10 and is considered about the hilliest ride that can be found in the area. You can take the opportunity to explore into downtown Bay Minette, or create a much longer loop that loops the eastern part of the county.

Skill Level:
Intermediate/Advanced – This route is reasonably easy to navigate since Baldwin County is generous with its road signage. AL 225 can be a bit busy during rush hours near the intersection with US 31 in Spanish Fort. Traffic clears up considerably a few miles north of the start point on 225. Weekends, very early weekdays or after rush hour weekdays are good times to ride this route.

The route is rolling with longish bulges in the terrain along the Tensaw River. While not hilly in a mountainous sense, there is rarely a flat stretch of road anywhere en route. The profile of the roads north of I-10 is quite different from the pan-flat terrain in the southern part of Baldwin County.

Variations:
For a 36-mile loop ride, follow a counterclockwise course from Spanish Fort starting on US 31 east towards Bay Minette. (This bit of road can be very busy during rush hours. It is best ridden on weekends or off-peak hours. It is a long, 9-mile ride to the first turn at Bromley Road.)

Hurricane Landing Loop Ride (See dashed route on map):

  • Start on US 31 and head east out of Spanish Fort
  • In 9 miles, turn left onto Bromley Road
  • First Right onto Pine Road
  • Left at T onto CR 39
  • Right at T onto CR 40 at Whitehouse Fork Church
  • CR 40 meanders north and west to CR 138
  • Left (southwest) onto CR 138
  • Follow CR 138 to AL 225 (BP Station at corner. Continue straight to visit Hurricane Landing in 3.6 miles.)
  • Left (south) onto AL 225
  • Return to Blakely Shopping Center in 12 miles

Features:
At the BP station at the 225/138 crossroads, take a short, scenic downhill excursion down CR 86/Hurricane Road to Hurricane Landing on the Tensaw River.
