Ruffner Mountain Nature Center

Alabama is truly blessed to have clubs and organizations, both private and governmental, that go the extra mile to protect our environment, and the Ruffner Mountain Nature Center goes far beyond the call of duty.

Situated on 1,011 acres just northeast of the heart of Birmingham, Ruffner is literally an oasis amidst the noise and bustle of the city. Many come here to enjoy the solitude this tract of land holds as they hike along one of 11 total miles of trails within its boundaries, while others of all ages come to learn about the environment, wildlife; and the history of the region.

Originally the site upon which the nature center occupies was home to an iron ore mining operation. The facility thrived from the 1880s to the 1950s. Remnants of the operation, including equipment and quarries, will be found on the center's trails.

Not only is the center dedicated to the preservation of the land and history of the region, but also to educating the public. On any given day volunteer educators lead outings down the trails, teaching us about the flora, fauna and geology of the area, outdoor skills, and much more. And the programs are excellent for all ages, from the youngest to the oldest. Please visit the Ruffner Mountain Nature Center Website for a complete schedule.

Whenever you are in the Birmingham area, make the short drive to Ruffner Mountain and remember, there is no fee to hike the trails, and many of the programs offered are free. The center is a non-profit organization, and it is asked that you consider making a donation or becoming a member of the center to help continue their outstanding program. Your support will be money well spent for generations to come.

There are many interconnecting trails within the Ruffner Mountain Nature Center. Please see the "Additional Information" section on where to obtain a detailed map.
